Onsite Offshore Model - Comedy or Tragedy

Onsite / Offshore - Comedy or tragedy :)

After being into this onsite and offshore model for almost 5 years, onething which is very consistent across software industry is night outs, either it is onsite or offshore
For folks who wanted to quote saying "Check your estimates,.." just drop off because no one does right estimation and even if right estimates were projected, they were never taken just because you will  never win the project then.
Now let us get on to the core on what happens at offshore and onsite

Offshore - there are two categories, one who is over dedicated and one totally disconnected and never cares
Now let us move step down again,

Offshore Dedicated guys : only reason why project runs and business is still on :), he never cares about
whether it is a holiday or not, mostly people who are away from home - so basically no one to care about, no one to worry whether he is reaching home at right time or not. They start with great enthusiasm, when the night outs starts prolonging, then comes a saturation, then frustration..

Benefits of being dedicated: probably if he is lucky enough, he might get awarded (not monitory wise), worst case he might get promoted with a condition (that he will need work more - LOL- come on he is already not going home), there is one more so called benefit (he will be shown a maya - that he will be sent to onsite [lol - unfortunately he does not know the truth behind it - it is next level to hell])

Disconnected folks - they can be categorized as those who are already committed (always on phone calls), verge of getting married or he / she have started looking out for other jobs. Irrespective of whether they work or not, they know how to demand during appraisals

Benefits of bring disconnected: simple they don’t toil themselves, when they are screwed up in the appraisal, the simple bulls eye request is "release" - so move out of it and start doing the same stuff in other project.

So now here starts the "Onsite" part of it.

Onsite - Most of the cases, he / she sits back commanding the offshore team tracking to know whether the issue is sorted out or not, they never look into it :). I don’t know how it starts that people usually get into a mentality of passing it to team rather than working it out.

Again - people does not want to purposely work or he does not know to work on it.

Project will be at its high pressure, offshore will be literally burning, but this guy never cares - just see what he doing - he will be doing a room share calculation on how much he need to give to others, calculating money on how much he spent @ McDonald’s.
This act of cunningness gets on them so much though they were so generous when they lived in India
There are still people who still contribute a lot and because of them every project survives - they actually never care on what's coming in, all that counts is true passion..

Whatever be it – every project goes on! J

  2. Good one, but all depents how you are taking this in correct way... we cannot judge people by looking staying late at office or not.. end of the day the productive efforts matters... i know lots of guys they are capable to finish their 8hrs work within 3-4 hrs and also other side, guys cannot complete their one day jon even within 12-15 hrs..:( boiled down to the capacities on individuals... But one worst thing is most of the heads supports or dey are happy on this night outs...

also we have to learn how say to say "No".. :)

  3. never been onsite. But from my experience, i was literally torn between family and work on holidays and weekends. So, my frustration set in quick. I'm a person who believes in the 9-5 routine and then go back home and tend to the family. Indian work culture is fast turning out to be lopsided towards office. And you said it right. Its because of the estimation (false) to win the contract and then sitting on the heads of the poor developers to stay through the day and finish the job while paying them meager wages(really!) offshore. When I had to fill out a form for employment here, I had a question about my previous employment salary in hours. It was a meager 10$ or less and I was aghast.
